Fastpitch: Not With a Bang, But a Whimper
2007 August 16

Admittedly, the world didn’t end, but the Boys in Orange dropped their second straight playoff game Tuesday night, losing around 12-8 or so to McNally’s, a solid team that struggled all year and won only two games — both over us.

Ouch.

Since I’m a stats geek (you’d think I’d like baseball more, but … meh), I’ll share my numbers with you on the season (no snickering). I batted second in every game, and played right field for the most part, along with shortstop (twice), center, and first. Remember, it’s been 10 years since I played fastpitch softball. Be kind.

GMS AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI BB K
10  35 6 8  2  2  1  9   6 1

HBP SAC SB CS  OBP  SLG  OPS  AVG
 0   0   2  0 .341 .486 .827 .229

I’m pretty hard on myself; there were a couple of times where I recorded myself as having reached on an error, but a home field official scorer might have given me a hit. So I’m disappointed in the average, but I’m happy with drawing my share of walks, striking out only once (and that was my second at-bat of the season), and producing a pretty solid slugging percentage for a slap hitter (I’m the Ichiro of small-time fastpitch softball, though without the cannon arm and lightning speed).

All in all, though, I enjoyed myself, and got much more comfortable as the season progressed. Even better, I never hurt myself. If they’ll have me, I’m looking forward to giving it another go next season. Maybe we can convince Chad to come home and help out next year.

not bad at all for taking 10 years off.. I cant imagine what my assist to turnover ration would be if I took 10 years off hoops… let alone my shooting percentage LOL..

Great that you didnt get hurt which is absolutly my #1 goal of each basketball season I play. I would LOVE to be able to go mike grogan style and play when im pushin 50.. dont know if that will happen but hey congrats on the season

Same here KG — our primary pitcher is 58 years old and still brings the heat. He’s playing in the state tournament with an over-45 team. I hope to still be in shape enough to compete in those types of divisions (and with the youngsters, obviously).

Tis true — I’m healthy! (Well, as healthy as I can reasonably expect to be.) I played 11 games of fastpitch softball and didn’t hurt myself once — not even a scraped knee.

    Amazing!
